The failure of the adaptation of Ghost in the Shell is still pretty fresh on many people’s minds. The film not only whitewashed its main characters, but addressed the issue within the movie by attempting something along the lines of, “we didn’t want people to recognize you, so now you’re White, lol”. It was a confusing move. Suffice it to say, any Hollywood adaptation of an Asian film, live-action or animated, will be further scrutinized. Which may not bode well for Adam Wingard’s Death Note adaptation. Starring Nat Wolff, Margaret Qualley, Keith Stanfield, and Willem Dafoe, the Americanized version of Death Note is attempting to quell any controversy by locating the narrative in Seattle. We’ll see if this holds up.
Death Note hits Netflix on August 25th, 2017.
