Blake Lively is heading into the octagon (Is that what they call it?). The former Gossip Girl star is lining up her next project, titled Bruised, that will center on Lively’s MMA character, as she makes a return to the sport. Per Deadline:

Blake Lively has been set for Bruised, a mixed marital arts action-drama directed by The Notebook and My Sister’s Keeper helmer Nick Cassavetes. Nick Meyer’s Sierra/Affinity is launching sales on the project to foreign buyers in Cannes this week.

Lively will play Jackie, a single mother working two jobs and a disgraced MMA fighter who has been up against the ropes her entire life. When the authorities threaten to take her young son away from her, she must get back in the cage for one last chance to fight for redemption and give her son the life she always wanted.

Michelle Rosenfarb writes the script while Thunder Road Pictures’ Basil Iwanyk will produce with Linda Gottlieb and Guymon Casady of Management 360. Project is eyeing a September start of shoot.

Nick Cassavetes last film was 2010’s The Other Woman. It wasn’t good. At all. Here’s hoping that Lively can make Cassavetes next film more livelier. Hey, I made a funny! Anyway, Cassavetes might actually have a future hit on his hands. Lively’s turn in 2016’s The Shallows proves that B-movies aren’t dead yet, so I can see Cassavetes going that route. Or it could be more like the Tom Hardy-fronted Warrior. Either way, Blake Lively, MMA fighter may not sound so weird after all.
