Margot Robbie has proven to be a versatile performer. Adept at disappearing into her roles, the Aussie actress continues to showcase a diverse resume. So it should come as no surprise that she’ll be portraying royalty sometime in the future. Per Variety:
Margot Robbie is in negotiations to play Queen Elizabeth in Focus Features and Working Title’s “Mary Queen of Scots,” opposite Saoirse Ronan.
Josie Rourke is directing the film. Working Title’s Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Deborah Hayward are producing.
“House of Cards” creator Beau Willimon is writing an original script based on a book by John Guy titled “The True Life of Mary Stuart.” “Mary” has yet to be greenlit, but sources say things are headed in the right direction. If greenlit, the film would likely go sometime later this year. Ronan will play the title role of Mary.
Following the success of big hits like “Suicide Squad” and “The Wolf of Wall Street,” this latest role gives the Australian-born Robbie a prestige part to add to her portfolio. It could also have awards season potential given Focus’ track record of pushing Oscar campaigns for its releases.
Robbie’s role as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, and her upcoming role as Tanya Harding in I, Tonya are clear indicators that she is unafraid to take on complex characters. She’ll do just fine as a Queen.
