It’s only fitting that the latest visual narrative surrounding the life of Martin Luther Jr. premieres in January 2015. Hitting theaters during the month of the annual holiday celebration, “Selma” stars David Oyelowo as the formidable civil rights figure. The title of the film refers to one of the most pivotal moments in the Civil Rights movement: the marches from Selma to Montgomery in 1965, which led to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

Opening in limited release on Christmas Day and nationwide January 9, 2015, “Selma” is written and directed by Ava Duvernay, and also stars:

Carmen Ejogo as Coretta Scott King
Giovanni Ribisi as Lee C. White
Tim Roth as George Wallace
Tom Wilkinson as President Lyndon B. Johnson
Oprah Winfrey as Annie Lee Cooper
Dylan Baker as J. Edgar Hoover
