Anyone who is a fan of sci-fi tv is more than likely familiar with the J.J. Abrams produced “Fringe” tv series. In it, a FBI agent, a crazy scientist, and the crazy scientist’s son from another reality form the “Fringe” group. A FBI outfit tasked with investigating crimes that fall within the realm of “paranormal science”. In addition, a company known has Massive Dynamic plays a major role throughout the series. They are best described as a bio-tech company that pushes the limits of innovation in any way, shape or form. Which includes studying and experimenting on the human body, and the very fabric of space and time. In fact, their slogan is, “What Do We Do? What Don’t We Do?”

Which brings us to Google. So far the company has created a lightning fast website, wearable tech (Google Glass), fake meat, and numerous other bio-tech based ventures. Their latest project, entitled Calico, wants us all to live forever…maybe.

According to the company website:

Calico is a research and development company whose mission is to harness advanced technologies to increase our understanding of the biology that controls lifespan. We will use that knowledge to devise interventions that enable people to lead longer and healthier lives. Executing on this mission will require an unprecedented level of interdisciplinary effort and a long-term focus for which funding is already in place.

Much of the website seems to indicate that it’s not just about life extension, but about understanding the human body as a means to provide superior methods of self-care for everyone. I think.

Although we can be certain that Google won’t go the Massive Dynamic route, it’ll be interesting to see what’s next.
